Captain Colin’s Canadian Coins - Virtual Coin Manipulatives

Instructions:

  • This resource is great for enhancing students' skills and understanding when it comes to counting Canadian money. Discuss strategies commonly used to determine the money amount when looking at coins. You can drag the coins to group them in a way that is easier for you to count. Make sure that no coin is covered by another. To help you with this, when you drag the coins, you will be able to see through them. You can also annotate to show your work.

Suggested Lessons or Activities:

  • This resource is very powerful because it is levelled and students can work in a level they are comfortable at and move up when ready. Counting money is a great activity that explores the application of number patterning in real life. When counting coins students should start with the coins of highest value and work their way down. They will practise counting by 200, 100, 25, 10, 5, and 1.
